October 9, 2008 saw NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting that San Antonio stay the course and continue to grow and prepare if the opportunity to be considered for an expansion team comes by. San Antonio has once again been in the news regarding the possibility of being in the NFL radar. But while Goodell did make it clear that the league has no immediate plans to grow beyond 32 teams he gave indications that there has been a shift in how the league views San Antonio. The good news is that If expansion comes, San Antonio would certainly be in the cards.

Again, just last month in September the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA announced San Antonio Sports Foundation to serve as an inaugural member for the NCAA Championship City pilot program. With the title comes multiple NCAA championship event hosting opportunities. San Antonio has been awarded the hosting rights for championship events for Women’s Basketball, Men and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Final Four, Men and Women’s Swimming and Diving and Women’s Volleyball. San Antonio is also a finalist for the next round of Men’s and Women’s Final Four Championship basketball tournaments.

The sports scenario certainly appears up and about in San Antonio. Susan Blackwood, Executive Director of SASF, feels that it is an incredible honor for the San Antonio Sports Foundation to be awarded this designation. The San Antonio Sports Foundation has a strong history of hosting successful NCAA championships. Also the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee has hosted several regional basketball tournaments. So the going appears very good as far as the sporting action is concerned.

Nelson Wolff Stadium, San Antonio - Courtesy www.minorleagueballparks.com

San Antonio is a great sports town with world class sporting events to attend and a host of sporting activities to participate in. San Antonio regularly hosts NCAA events like the Men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments, volleyball championships, the Alamo Bowl and more. Up until now the city has been hosting just one professional sports team, the Spurs. And if you’ve ever been to San Antonio during basketball season, you know one thing that the crowds here just adore is their team. The people just love to cheer the team on and stay with it through it all. As the home of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs besides the cheering the town plays a wide variety of sports as also playing host to some of the biggest amateur sporting events in the world.

NBA World Champion San Antonio Spurs play their home games at the AT&T Center just minutes away from the San Antonio Riverwalk. With players like Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the Spurs look forward to more exciting events. The San Antonio Rampage Hockey team is the AHL affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes and play their home schedule at the SBC Center. San Antonio Rampage is San Antonio’s professional ice hockey team. The San Antonio Silver Stars are San Antonio’s entry in the WNBA. The San Antonio Missions baseball team is the AA affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and play their games in Wolff Stadium. San Antonio Missions are the city’s minor league professional baseball team.

All said and done it remains true that San Antonio has only one top level professional sports team and that is the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. The Spurs have been playing in San Antonio since 1973 and have won four NBA championships. Graduating from the Alamodome and Hemisfair Arena the team has now moved on to the AT&T Center. The AT&T Center is also home to the San Antonio Rampage and San Antonio Silver Stars both owned by the Spurs.

San Antonio is also home to the Double-A Minor League affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the Sun San Antonio Missions who play at Nelson Wolff Stadium. San Antonio also hosts the NCAA football Alamo Bowl each December. The city also has two Rugby Union teams, the Alamo City Rugby Football Club and San Antonio Rugby Football Club. The University of Texas as San Antonio fields San Antonio’s only NCAA Division 1 athletic teams known as the UTSA Roadrunners. The city is also home of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, played annually in the Alamodome and televised live on NBC.

The Alamodome is a 65,000-seat facility that is home to many sporting events, concerts, expos, tradeshows and much more. While the AT&T Center is home to the Spurs, Silver Stars and Rampage, as well as the rodeo and many other events and concerts in San Antonio. The arena is easily accessible from many San Antonio freeways. The AT&T Center is home to the NBA 4-time world championship San Antonio Spurs, the American Hockey League San Antonio Rampage, the WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars and the annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. The AT&T Center opened in 2002 and is operated by Spurs Sports and Entertainment.

The Valero Texas Open is a 72-hole, four-day official PGA Tour event which takes place in San Antonio each year. This tournament has been a San Antonio tradition since 1922 and is the third oldest PGA Tour tournament. The Resort Course at LA Cantera is the current location of the Open. Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium also known as Wolff Stadium is primarily used for baseball and is the home field of the San Antonio Missions team The UTSA Roadrunners baseball team also plays some home games at the stadium. It opened in 1994 and has a capacity of about 9,500 spectators. The stadium is located about 8 miles from the Alamo and Downtown and lies on the city’s west side.

If you not only like to watch sports but play them too, San Antonio is a great place to be. You can enjoy golf, water sports, fishing, and all kinds of activities throughout the San Antonio area. Or you may simply participate in the San Antonio Marathon. Watch out for November 16 when everybody is game for a run. Including one for Kids! The Fitness mantra is on for San Antonions. You must also take a look at some other San Antonio area sports and for more information on the sporting scene stay connected to the net where you might also be able to book tickets for current sports events in and around town. While at it be sure to check out the locations of the venues so that a simple click on Sanantonio Hotels would get you a hotel room in close proximity.
